Facebook released some new targeting options Wednesday and we are geeking out! Not because they are ground breaking advances but because they make the struggle of advertising on Facebook a little less daunting.
Topic Targeting
Similar to the current broad category targeting option but with more options to choose from. Facebook’s idea is that if you want to target users who like “Lady Gaga” you will likely also want to target those who like “Lady Gaga Music” and “Lady Gaga Poker Face”. Makes sense, and takes some time away from putting in all variations of your target. This will also auto-populate similar interest types (Lady Gaga to Rihanna to B. Spears).
Paste in a list? You mean you don’t have to individually select each interest that you want to use in the ad builder tool? This addition is going to be a huge time saver for new ad campaigns using similar targeting options to a previously run campaign. You can still add in interests individually in addition to your saved list, and Facebook populates suggested targets based on what you have already entered.
Zip Code Targeting
This option lets you get a little more specific in your geo-modified targeting than simply “Denver, Colorado” or “cities within 25/50 miles of Denver, Colorado”.
So the moral of the story is that these updates probably won’t make building ads on Facebook super streamlined and well, Google-like, but it is a start and we’re just excited about the list functionality.
